DANC Monthly Happenings | October 2025

Hello Reader,

As Halloween approaches, I’m reminded how important it is to balance fun with safety. Many of us love the joy of costumes, pumpkins, and trick-or-treating, but for families living with dementia, this season can bring added challenges. The unexpected knocks at the door, noisy decorations, or even a change in routine can sometimes feel overwhelming for both caregivers and loved ones.

This fall, I encourage you to find ways to enjoy the season while keeping things calm and safe—perhaps by celebrating with close friends, enjoying festive treats at home, or doing arts and crafts together. Just as children look for lighted paths on Halloween night, families facing dementia look for steady support along their journey. At Dementia Alliance, we are honored to walk that path with you, offering comfort, resources, and community every step of the way.

Interim Executive Director

Truly A Night to Remember

Thank you to everyone who joined us at this year's Gala! Together, we raised $91,000 for families in North Carolina. That means 910 hours of one-to-one Dementia Navigation support. We're grateful for your support, and we know everyone who will benefit from it is, too.

DANC Ambassadors

We’re excited to share that 9 new Ambassadors just joined Dementia Alliance after our third training! Ambassadors help us bring more support and resources to families across North Carolina. With new Ambassadors in Alamance, Buncombe, Cleveland, and Guilford counties, we’re adding to our team already serving in Wake, Pender, Pitt, Lee, Cumberland, Moore, and Franklin. We’re so glad this program is growing and reaching even more communities!

Art with Heart

In memory of Don Stanek, Charlotte Stanek is sharing her artwork to make a difference. From October 4–17, she will be offering her paintings for purchase, with all proceeds benefiting Dementia Alliance of North Carolina. To schedule a private viewing in Raleigh and see the artwork available, please call 919-842-5829.

Save the Date: Candlelight Reflections

We invite you to join us on Thursday, November 6, from 6-8 pm at Guardian Angel Thrift to remember those who have passed, and honor those who are living with dementia. While the candlelighting begins at 7 pm, we'll have food trucks, live music, and resource exhibitors. If you can't join us in person, we'll be sharing opportunities to participate virtually and to hold your own community Candlelight Reflections!

Tip of the Month

If you need ideas for activities you can do with your loved one living with dementia, try building an activity box! This guide gives you instructions on what to include, how to use the kit, and positive ways to engage your loved one with the idea. One example: a button or ribbon sorting box that encourages sorting by color and size, depending on the level of ability.

Each candle represented a story — a life touched by dementia, a bond of love, and a shared hope for brighter days ahead, even in the darkness. This season of...
